The Author: A Modern ‘Encyclopedist’
“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible” — Richard P. Feynman
Aias-Theodoros Papastavrou is a physician specialised in Otolaryngology, with subspecialty training in otologic and endoscopic surgery, as well as neurotology. Over the past decade, his clinical work has evolved toward a more integrative focus, emphasising the prevention and management of chronic and neoplastic diseases. He is the founder and director of Integrative Medicine Consultancy Ltd., and the author of the Greek-language medical textbook The Endocannabinoid System and Cannabis: The Scientific Basis.
Beyond medicine, he has long pursued parallel intellectual interests in ancient Greek literature, maritime history, sustainability, fractal physiology, and geopolitics. The habits of inquiry shaped by scientific training informed these explorations, even where the objects of inquiry lie beyond the strict bounds of science. Although not formally trained in international relations, his sustained engagement with classical sources and close observation of global affairs inform the perspective of this volume.
In an age of relentless specialization, the author embraces the older ideal of the generalist — the encyclopedist — for whom the boundaries between medicine, the sciences, history, and geopolitics are not barriers but bridges. This book is one outcome of that lifelong pursuit of synthesis: an effort to bring a Thucydidean sensibility to bear upon the strategic dilemmas of the modern world.
